Eye-Fi Develops X2 Utility For Legacy Cards

9 August 2016

In an email to owners of its legacy Eye-Fi SD cards which will no longer function after Sept. 15, Eye-Fi said it was working on a free new utility 'for the PC and Mac' to prolong their useful life. The Mac version was in fact released today.

According to the email:

As a reminder, after Sept. 15 Eye-Fi Center desktop software will no longer have the ability to configure Eye-Fi X2 and other cards impacted by the EOL. Customers wishing to use the X2U will have to uninstall Eye-Fi Center from their computer prior to installing the new utility. Once the X2U is installed and activated, cards impacted by the EOL will have ability to continue transferring images to a desktop computer.

The X2 Utility will only allow transfers to a desktop computer not to any cloud service, the company added.

The Mac version is available for download now. 'If and when the Windows version is available, it can be accessed at the same location,' the email added.

We can confirm that the utility successfully enabled WiFi transfers from an 8-GB Pro X2 under Mac OS 10.11.6 El Capitan.

For more information see the text of the email below.

To the users of Eye-Fi X2 and Earlier Generation Eye-Fi cards:

Last month we announced the 'End of Life' of a range of products including Eye-Fi Pro X2 and prior products. For details on that announcement please click HERE. There is new information contained in this announcement.

Note: Eyefi Mobi and Mobi Pro customers are not impacted by this EOL process.

New x2 Utility

This notice is to inform you that Eyefi has started work on a new desktop software utility -- the X2 Utility (X2U) for the PC and Mac -- that will permit cards impacted by the EOL continue operating beyond the deadline of Sept. 15.

The X2U will be provided to users free of charge as-is and without warranty or helpdesk support. We will publish knowledge base documentation on how to set-up and use the X2U.

X2 Utility Highlights

  • Support for Pro X2 and all earlier generation products with the 'Eye-Fi' branding as well as 3rd party branded cards from SanDisk and Visioneer
  • Activation and set-up of cards to transfer images to a PC or Mac via an infrastructure or direct network connection
  • Transferred images will be saved to a directory of users choosing but will be organized in a date based chronological order
  • Eye-Fi Center software must be un-installed from the PC or Mac prior to installation of the X2U
  • X2U will not integrate with Eye-Fi View nor Eyefi Cloud service: it will be limited to desktop transfer only

Today we are releasing the X2U on the Mac platform. We will provide an updated notice if and when the X2U becomes available on Windows and cannot guarantee such availability before the end of August and prior to the shutdown of Eye-Fi Center and Eye-Fi View.

Finally, this utility is being provided to allow more time for customers seeking an alternative WiFi SD card solution. It is not intended as a permanent/long-term solution. The X2U will not be adding any new features beyond this one-time release set of capabilities.

In order to download the Mac version of the X2U as well as accessing further information on the utility, please click HERE. If and when the Windows version is available, it can be accessed at the same location.

Eye-Fi, the global leader in wireless memory cards, has announced in a recent press release the availability of a new Windows desktop receiver for the Mobi card.

While still in the Beta phase, the new desktop receiver will allow you to transfer your photos from the Eye-Fi Mobi card directly to your desktop via Wi-Fi connection.

This new feature comes to extend the simple camera-to-mobile photo and video transfer capabilities of the Mobi card, making it a reliable and easy to work with storage medium.

Matt DiMaria, CEO of Eye-Fi said that, 'Our customers love the ability to snap great pictures on a camera and instantly share from a phone or tablet, and now we're taking that experience one step further.'

'Now we're adding a simple, instant way to transfer to the desktop and make it easy for customers to get their photos on their computers to edit and archive,' he added.

For the moment, no further details have been offered regarding Eye-Fi's new desktop receiver price, but during the beta period, the receiver will be free to use for all customers. A beta version for Mac is also planned to be released soon.

Here are some of the Eye-Fi desktop receiver features at a glance:

Eyefi Mobi Desktop Transfer

Simple setup: Once installed, simply enter the Mobi card's unique 10-digit activation code, and your Windows computer is paired. Use the same activation code to pair with multiple desktops and mobile devices as needed.

Transfer anywhere: Built-in WiFi means no WiFi network, hotspot or home Internet connection needed for pairing or transfer; Mobi transfers photos from a camera to the intended device anywhere, whenever new content is detected.

Eyefi Mobi Desktop Receiver For Mac Pro

Works with cameras users already know (and love): Mobi works in thousands of cameras, including hundreds of Eye-Fi connected cameras that have integrated Eye-Fi technology for improved usability.

Backs up automatically: Photos and videos transfer as they're taken, so if anything happens to the camera, content is already safe on your mobile or desktop.
